The House on the Rock
A cliffside house opens into music machines, model ships, streets, organs, carousels, and vast themed rooms whose accumulation is the real subject.

Artwork inspired by Eugene Von Bruenchenhein
Alex Jordan Jr.’s original house is only the threshold. Successive sections enlarge from low, dim, rock-hugging rooms into collections and theatrical mechanisms whose scale eventually overwhelms ordinary distinctions among museum, architecture, amusement, and obsession. The Infinity Room projects over the valley with no supporting columns beneath its far end, making structure and vertigo part of the experience.
The later route is long, dark, loud, and deliberately excessive: automated orchestras, a sea-creature battle, doll displays, transportation galleries, and the enormous indoor carousel arrive with little restraint. Do not expect conventional labels or a scholarly collection hierarchy. Choose the fullest route only if stamina, sensory tolerance, and time match the building’s ambition.

Quick guide

- Sensory peak
- Carousel and music machines
Treat excess itself as the organizing idea
- Begin with the original house
- Low ceilings, stone, carpet, and compressed views establish Jordan’s first architectural world before the collections expand.
- Step onto the Infinity Room
- Look through the floor and side windows while remembering that the tapering structure cantilevers above the valley.
- Listen for illusion
- Many “orchestras” use automated instruments, theatrical mechanisms, and recorded elements rather than human-like robots playing normally.
- Protect your energy
- Later sections add distance, stairs, darkness, sound, and visual density; route choices cannot always be reversed easily.
Good to know
This is not Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin, despite the nearby location and common confusion; the sites have separate entrances, tickets, histories, and purposes.
