Historic Jacksonville

Historic Jacksonville focuses the visit on a Gold Rush town whose street plan and brick commercial blocks.

Historic Jacksonville

Artwork inspired by Louis Bunce

Jacksonville grew rapidly after gold discoveries in the 1850s, and its surviving commercial blocks, houses, churches, and civic buildings preserve the scale of an inland mining-era town. The district also holds evidence of Chinese residents, merchants, laborers, women, and later cultural institutions that a simple “Old West” label leaves out.

Use a walking route to compare building materials, setbacks, storefronts, and later reuse rather than treating every facade as unchanged. Museums and interiors keep separate schedules, but streets and cemetery landscapes can still reveal boom, fire, migration, segregation, and preservation. Britt’s music grounds show how a historic district continues to acquire new identities.

Good to know

The National Historic Landmark district is a living town, not a ticketed compound. Public streets remain accessible, while individual museums, shops, houses, and cemetery programs set their own hours and rules.
