Historic Arkansas Museum
Restored nineteenth-century buildings, Arkansas-made objects, and changing exhibitions reveal frontier Little Rock as a complicated urban community.

Artwork inspired by Jenny Eakin Delony
Historic Arkansas Museum combines a modern gallery center with a preserved block of some of Little Rock’s oldest structures. Guided tours enter historic houses and a former tavern while exhibitions examine Arkansas decorative arts, firearms, textiles, painting, and the people—free and enslaved—whose labor shaped the settlement. The strongest visit connects named individuals and objects rather than treating the buildings as interchangeable frontier scenery.
General gallery admission is free, but access to the historic grounds and interiors depends on scheduled guided tours. Start with current exhibitions, then join a tour that puts room arrangements, construction, and archaeology into context. Because the site occupies an active downtown block, allow time for parking and verify whether the tour content and building access match your group’s mobility needs.

Make the visit count
- Begin in the galleries
- Current exhibitions supply object vocabulary and individual stories before the historic interiors compress them into domestic spaces.
- Take a guided tour
- Set beside it the buildings make much more sense with archaeological evidence, construction history, and the lives of documented residents explained aloud.
- Read beyond founders
- Look for the work of enslaved people, women, artisans, and laborers rather than allowing prominent property owners to dominate the block’s history.
- Study Arkansas-made work
- Check furniture, silver, pottery, quilts, and paintings show how local makers translated national styles through regional materials and markets.
Good to know
The free galleries and the guided historic-grounds experience are not identical. Tour times, interior access, and program fees can change, so confirm the day’s schedule before parking downtown; several old structures have unavoidable thresholds or narrow passages.
