Harley-Davidson Museum
More than a century of motorcycles, racing, engineering, advertising, customization, and rider culture unfolds on the riverfront campus where the company began.

Artwork inspired by Schomer Lichtner
The serial-number-one motorcycle is the natural starting point, but the museum becomes more interesting when design is followed through fuel tanks, frames, engines, uniforms, posters, and sound. The “Engine Room” exposes mechanical evolution, while racing and customization galleries show that riders continually reshaped the product rather than simply consuming it.
Harley-Davidson’s story also carries questions about work, war production, gender, clubs, rebellion, branding, and who gets pictured as an American motorcyclist. Non-riders have plenty to read here: compare the corporate archive with the machines riders altered, then step onto the campus riverwalk to understand why this is a factory-city story as much as a vehicle collection.

Follow one machine from workshop to worldwide symbol
- Start at serial number one
- Study how bicycle proportions, leather drive, and a tiny engine reveal the company’s experimental beginnings.
- Listen before reading
- Engine sounds make changes in displacement, rhythm, and exhaust character easier to remember than model numbers alone.
- Find the rider’s hand
- Custom bikes, club material, and travel stories show where company design ends and owner identity begins.
- Separate history from branding
- Ask which voices come from corporate archives and which arrive through workers, racers, women riders, and clubs.
Good to know
The museum is only one part of the campus; restaurant, shop, and event hours differ, so a campus listing should not be mistaken for museum admission.
