Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area
Hāpuna’s long crescent, clear water, lava headlands, and open horizon make it a classic Kohala beach, but conditions range from calm swimming to powerful shorebreak.

Hāpuna’s long crescent, clear water, lava headlands, and open horizon make it a classic Kohala beach, but conditions range from calm swimming to powerful shorebreak. Sand width changes seasonally, and winter swell can transform the safest-looking water. The Ala Kahakai corridor and nearby coastal sites place the recreation area within a much older network of movement and settlement.
Check lifeguard flags and enter only within your ability; do not infer safety from other swimmers. Shade is limited, reefs and rocks border parts of the bay, and nonresident parking payment should be handled before settling on the beach.
