Hank Aaron State Trail
A mostly paved east–west route links Lake Michigan, the Menomonee Valley, Harley-Davidson, American Family Field, State Fair Park, and western neighborhoods.

Artwork inspired by Santos Zingale
The trail follows a landscape transformed from wetland and Indigenous homeland into rail yards and heavy industry, then partially remade through cleanup, habitat restoration, public access, and new development. It is both transportation infrastructure and a cross-section of Milwaukee’s economic geography.
Most miles are paved and relatively level, but street crossings, event traffic, construction, detours, and fast users require attention. Choose a thematic segment—lakefront to the museum campus, Menomonee Valley ecology, or western connection—and use transit or a round-trip plan instead of assuming every attraction belongs in one ride.

Read an urban corridor as history in motion
- Begin with the valley
- Wetland, rail yard, factory, brownfield, and restored habitat occupy the same geographic story.
- Watch every crossing
- Off-street mileage still includes intersections, driveways, detours, and event surges.
- Pair industry with ecology
- Look for stormwater landscapes and river restoration beside surviving industrial infrastructure.
- Use a realistic segment
- Fifteen-plus miles one way is a transport plan, not a casual museum connector.
Good to know
Games, festivals, construction, and freight activity can change crossings and crowd levels even when the trail remains open.
