Greenback Cutthroat Trout
Look first for dense black spotting and orange-red throat slashes beneath the jaw, then confirm it in cold clear south platte headwater streams behind barriers to nonnative trout. Those two clues make Greenback Cutthroat Trout much easier to identify responsibly in Colorado.

The greenback cutthroat is the native cutthroat lineage of the South Platte drainage and Colorado’s state fish. Genetic work showed that many populations long called greenbacks were other cutthroat lineages, leaving one known source population for modern recovery.
Restoration relies on hatchery propagation, reintroduction, and barriers that keep nonnative trout from hybridizing or competing. Fish only where regulations explicitly allow it, wet hands, minimize air exposure, and never move trout or bait between waters.

Field decisions for Greenback Cutthroat Trout
- Check the drainage
- A South Platte headwater with a managed native population is stronger evidence than color alone.
- Read several marks
- Combine throat slashes, dense spotting, body color, and fin pattern rather than relying on one feature.
- Expect hybrids
- Introduced cutthroat lineages and hybrid fish make visual identification uncertain in many streams.
- Keep water clean
- Follow fishing closures and disinfect gear before moving between isolated headwaters.
