Fort Gibson Historic Site
One of Oklahoma’s oldest military posts connects forced removal, Indian Territory, Civil War, and federal expansion.

Artwork inspired by Woody Crumbo
Established in 1824, Fort Gibson became entangled with removals of southeastern nations, military roads, intertribal conflict, commerce, and Civil War campaigns. Original and reconstructed buildings reveal different levels of evidence and should be identified as such.
Use the visitor center before walking the upper and lower sites. Ask whose security the fort served in each decade, and check reenactment details rather than assuming costumed programs represent every perspective.
