Fort Dalles Museum and Anderson Homestead
Fort Dalles Museum and Anderson Homestead focuses the visit on military and the Anderson collection broadens the story beyond the fort.

Artwork inspired by Henk Pander
Fort Dalles Museum uses the surviving Surgeon’s Quarters and the Anderson Homestead to interpret military, settler, transport, and domestic life around The Dalles. Furnishings, wagons, tools, photographs, and grounds span different contexts, so the site is most useful when each object is tied to its original owner, work, and date.
The former post participated in United States expansion through a place already central to Native trade and travel. Read the military story beside Wasco, Wishram, and regional Indigenous history rather than beginning with settlement. The historic buildings have limited space and seasonal access, while the grounds alone cannot supply their full context.
