Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park

Mandan earthlodge history and a reconstructed cavalry post share one Missouri River terrace.

Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park

Artwork inspired by Walter Piehl Jr.

The park contains two stories that should not be treated as a single frontier narrative. On-A-Slant Village interprets a Mandan community occupied centuries before the military post, while reconstructed Fort McKeen and the Custer House address the nineteenth-century army presence.

Use a guided tour when available because otherwise the furnished buildings can appear self-explanatory when they are not. Walk between the village and fort to understand how elevation, river access, and sightlines shaped both locations.

Shape the visit around guided interpretation plus grounds walk and missouri River terrace south of Mandan, which reveal different scales of the same landscape. 3–5 hours is a useful starting allowance, but weather and seasonal access should decide the final route.

Good to know

On-A-Slant Mandan Village predates the military post by centuries; treating the two as one frontier story erases their different purposes, communities, and histories.
