Foothills Trail

The trail links Oconee and Table Rock state parks through gorges, rivers, Lake Jocassee overlooks, waterfalls, long stair systems, and remote forest.

Foothills Trail

Artwork inspired by Boyd Saunders

The Foothills Trail reveals the Blue Ridge escarpment through accumulation rather than a single summit: waterfalls, river crossings, Jocassee overlooks, deep forest, long stairs, and repeated descents and climbs. Its challenge comes from sustained elevation change, wet tread, and remoteness, while engineered crossings and the Duke Energy stair systems become as characteristic of the route as its wilderness scenery.

A first visit works well as a day hike from a major state-park access, where one section can establish the trail’s scale without committing to the full traverse. Longer trips require section-by-section decisions about water treatment, navigation, camping, and exit points. Name both endpoints and arrange transportation in advance, because the corridor offers no convenient resupply and storms can disrupt bridges or roads.

Quick guide

Best introduction
A day hike from a major state-park access provides context without committing to a traverse.
Water discipline
Source availability and treatment are planning fundamentals, not afterthoughts.

Plan by segment, water, and exit

Choose a passage
Waterfalls, escarpment, lakeshore, and deep forest occur on sections with very different difficulty.
Measure elevation
Repeated climbs and descents matter more than mileage on this long backcountry route.
Solve transportation
Point-to-point hiking requires a real shuttle plan, not hope for a ride at a remote trailhead.
Carry navigation
Blazes help, but junctions, weather, darkness, and limited service still require a map.

Good to know

Plan water and transport by section before counting miles; the trail has no convenient resupply corridor.
