Edelman Fossil Park & Museum
A modern fossil museum connects real New Jersey discoveries with hands-on Cretaceous exploration.

Artwork inspired by Ben Shahn
The Edelman Fossil Park & Museum stands beside a former quarry whose sediments preserve a remarkably revealing interval around the end of the Cretaceous. Fossils from this New Jersey ground let visitors connect large-scale extinction to individual shells, fish, reptiles, and the changing ancient sea.
A guided quarry dig is the headline extra, but it is not included in ordinary admission. It takes about an hour and involves real dirt; reserve it separately and choose footwear accordingly. The museum itself can fill a family visit with exhibits, hands-on activities, and outdoor spaces. Last entry is earlier than the posted closing time, so a late-afternoon arrival needs deliberate planning.

Quick guide
- Ask what is local
- Distinguish quarry fossils from comparative display pieces.
- Book the dig
- Reserve the guided quarry experience separately from admission.
Know before you go
- Begin with the local site
- Read the quarry story before the full-scale reconstructions.
- Separate evidence from model
- Ask which fossils are direct finds and which scenes are reconstructions.
- Prepare for soil
- Closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get dirty suit the dig.
- Use the full day
- General admission allows time beyond the timed entry.
Good to know
General admission does not include a quarry dig or premium VR experience. Dig availability changes with weather and season, and timed advance booking is strongly recommended.
