EAA Aviation Museum
Historic aircraft, homebuilt ingenuity, warbirds, racing, and a working flightline explain why Oshkosh became a global meeting place for people who build and fly.

Artwork inspired by Warrington Colescott
EAA is not simply an airplane collection. Its central subject is participation: amateurs, engineers, mechanics, pilots, and dreamers modifying established designs or building from plans in garages and workshops. The homebuilt galleries make risk, regulation, materials, and iteration visible in ways that a chronology of famous aircraft cannot.
Warbirds and record-setting machines provide spectacle, but the most useful route pairs one iconic aircraft with a humble experimental solution—an unusual control surface, composite structure, cockpit compromise, or engine installation. During AirVenture the entire campus operates differently, with immense crowds, traffic controls, and event admission replacing an ordinary museum day.

Quick guide
- Begin with homebuilding
- Look for problems solved with materials, weight, control, and available engines before moving to record holders
- Enter a cockpit mentally
- Use sightlines, seat position, instruments, and access to imagine the pilot’s workload rather than admiring only the exterior
Read aviation as a chain of experiments
- Begin with homebuilding
- Look for problems solved with materials, weight, control, and available engines before moving to record holders.
- Enter a cockpit mentally
- Use sightlines, seat position, instruments, and access to imagine the pilot’s workload rather than admiring only the exterior.
- Compare military and civil goals
- Notice how range, payload, speed, maintainability, and safety produce different compromises.
- Treat AirVenture separately
- Festival week transforms roads, parking, hours, tickets, and what portions of the campus are accessible.
Good to know
Pioneer Airport rides and seasonal operations are not guaranteed with a standard indoor visit, and AirVenture week requires entirely different planning.
