Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park
Walk or cycle the historic canal corridor, where locks, water, towns, and former towing routes shape an easy grade.

Artwork inspired by Asher B. Durand
The D&R Canal is a linear state park, not a single destination. Its main canal and feeder canal linked waterways and towns, moving goods before roads and railways changed the region’s economy. On the towpath, the gentle grade is the historical clue: it was built for animals pulling boats, not for modern recreation. A short out-and-back can reveal more than racing through a long mileage target.
Choose a named access point and turnaround before setting out. Surface, crowding, and road crossings vary by segment, and a canal-side parking lot may be many miles from another attraction on the corridor. Blackwells Mills offers a legible canal-house setting; the app should anchor there only after the exact lot and place page are confirmed.
