The Delaware Contemporary
A working-artist hub on Wilmington’s riverfront, where seven galleries and 26 studios keep the conversation moving.

Artwork inspired by Gretchen Hupfel
Founded by artists in 1979, The Delaware Contemporary feels less like a fixed collection than an active exchange. Seven galleries bring changing exhibitions into contact with 26 on-site studios. A work seen here may be part of a current conversation, not an object you can expect to find in the same room next year. Check what is on view, then choose a few works to study slowly.
The industrial riverfront building is part of Wilmington’s reuse story. A First Friday visit can be social and lively, while an ordinary afternoon offers more room for looking. Do not assume every artist studio is open to drop-in visitors; ask at the desk about public programs or studio access.
