Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Forest, ravines, farms, waterfalls, canal locks, towpath, rail line, villages, and a recovering Cuyahoga River form a long, narrow national park between Cleveland and Akron.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Artwork inspired by Frank Wilcox

Cuyahoga Valley is neither untouched wilderness nor an urban park enlarged beyond recognition. The river corridor holds Indigenous homelands, canal engineering, quarrying, farms, twentieth-century recreation, environmental damage, and remarkable recovery. Brandywine Falls and the Ledges are visually immediate, while locks, culverts, barns, wetlands, and the Towpath reveal how people repeatedly remade the valley.

Start at Boston Mill, then build one coherent route: Brandywine plus a short gorge walk; the Ledges loop at golden hour; or a bicycle section linking canal structures and Beaver Marsh. Parking at famous trailheads often fills before midmorning on pleasant weekends, and temporary Towpath construction is common. The park is free and fragmented, so success depends on current-condition checks rather than collecting every named stop.

How to build one excellent valley day

Orient at Boston Mill
Use the map to understand the park’s long north–south shape.
Choose one system
Follow geology, canal engineering, farms, or river restoration across several stops.
Move without backtracking
Pair nearby trailheads instead of chasing a top-ten list.
Check closures
Floods, construction, and crowding routinely change the best route.

Good to know

There is no single scenic entrance road. Boston Mill is the best orientation point, while Brandywine and popular Ledges lots can fill early. River water quality and trail construction require a same-day conditions check.
