Cumberland Gap National Historical Park
Geology, Indigenous travel, wildlife paths, settler roads, Civil War fortifications, Hensley Settlement, and 85 miles of trails complicate the familiar gateway-to-the-West slogan.

Artwork inspired by Paul Sawyier
Cumberland Gap is best understood as a mountain corridor repeatedly used for different purposes, not simply as a celebrated gateway west. Geology directed wildlife paths and human travel, while Indigenous routes, settler migration, trade, Civil War fortifications, and later tourism placed competing meanings on the same passage. That layered history complicates any uncomplicated story of heroic expansion.
Begin with the visitor-center map so the break through the ridges is legible before driving to Pinnacle Overlook. The panorama clarifies the park’s three-state geography, but it should not reduce movement, settlement, and displacement to scenery; ridge trails, earthworks, and the historic gap provide closer evidence. Choose Hensley Settlement, Gap Cave, or another trail as a distinct second experience, allowing for travel time, reservations, weather, and physical demands.
