Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

One of the country’s largest zoo campuses combines seven geographic regions, conservation interpretation, an aquarium, rides, seasonal experiences, and enough walking to demand a route.

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

Artwork inspired by John A. Ruthven

The Columbus Zoo is not a quick circuit around cages. Its regions—among them Congo Expedition, Heart of Africa, Asia Quest, North America, Australia and the Islands, Shores and Aquarium, and Adventure Cove—spread across a very large campus. Animal visibility changes with weather, choice, care routines, and habitat access, so a thoughtful visit chooses priorities rather than promising every species.

Pick three anchor regions and connect them with the zoo’s current map. Heart of Africa is expansive and seasonal; Manatee Rescue, Rehabilitate, Release explains the institution’s role in a federal recovery network; North America can reveal local conservation beside charismatic animals. Parking is paid, admission uses variable pricing, and summer crowds make the first and last hours calmer than midday.

Quick guide

Choose three regions
Build a realistic route around the animals and ideas you value most.
Revisit active habitats
An absent animal may be indoors, resting, or simply beyond your first sightline.

How to plan a zoo larger than your attention span

Choose three regions
Build a realistic route around the animals and ideas you value most.
Revisit active habitats
An absent animal may be indoors, resting, or simply beyond your first sightline.
Find conservation work
Ask what happens beyond display, especially with manatees and regional species.
Use sensory resources
Quiet Hours, sensory bags, maps, and accessible routes can reshape the day.

Good to know

Zoo hours vary substantially by month and evening events can use separate tickets. This is a large, exposed campus: check the daily schedule, prioritize regions, and bring weather protection and supportive shoes.
