Chesler Park Loop

A demanding backcountry circuit crosses passes, open grassland, and the narrow Joint Trail among the Needles district’s striped sandstone spires.

Chesler Park Loop

Artwork inspired by V. Douglas Snow

From Elephant Hill, the loop reaches Chesler Park through a series of sandstone passes, then can incorporate the Joint Trail’s deep, narrow fractures. Distance, route options, and repeated short climbs make it more demanding than the mileage alone suggests.

Carry a detailed map and all water; there is none reliably available on route. Follow cairns across rock, avoid cryptobiotic soil, and do not enter side joints casually. Summer heat and winter ice both magnify the remoteness.

Good to know

The Elephant Hill access road is slow and parking is limited. This is not a casual add-on after an Island in the Sky morning; the Needles district requires its own drive and day. Start early enough to finish route-finding before dark.
