Chahinkapa Zoo
A compact Wahpeton zoo makes individual histories, daily care, and conservation breeding easier to follow across more than 200 animals from six continents.

Artwork inspired by Marsha Lehmann
Chahinkapa Zoo’s useful scale encourages patient observation rather than collection counting. Orangutan Tal, a gibbon family, tigers, snow leopard, white rhino, and rescued grizzlies are among the animals whose histories connect daily husbandry with broader conservation or human-wildlife questions.
Ask at admission about current training, keeper activity, and weather-dependent visibility, then choose two habitats to revisit. The rescued grizzlies’ story makes food-conditioning consequences concrete; an orangutan session can reveal voluntary training and individual choice. The restored 1926 Prairie Rose Carousel is a separate historic park experience, not a substitute for that animal-focused route.
- Collection
- More than 200 animals from six continents
- Best method
- Ask about training, then revisit two habitats
- Historic extra

Quick guide
- Begin with today
- Ask which animals, training sessions, and amenities are active
- Plan a return
- Compare one habitat before and after heat, shade, or keeper activity
Use Chahinkapa’s scale to follow individual animals
- Ask what is happening today
- Check at admission for current training times, keeper activity, carousel operation, and weather-related habitat changes.
- Choose one conservation story
- Begin with orangutan Tal, the gibbon family, snow leopard, white rhino, or another current program animal.
- Read the grizzly lesson
- At Cocoa and Copper, connect their rescue story to the danger of people feeding wild bears.
- Make a second observation
- Return to one habitat after shade, temperature, feeding, or visitor noise changes.
Good to know
Cocoa and Copper arrived after their mother was killed by a train following repeated human feeding. Their history gives the familiar “never feed wild bears” rule a specific welfare consequence.
