Center for Creative Photography
A major photographic archive is undertaking a multiyear collection-sustainability project: the main Center Galleries are closed while scheduled exhibitions continue in the Alice Chaiten Baker Interdisciplinary Gallery.

Artwork inspired by Mark Klett
CCP holds archives from photographers including Ansel Adams, W. Eugene Smith, Lola Álvarez Bravo, and Garry Winogrand, but the public visit during the collections project is much narrower than that institutional scale suggests. Only the Alice Chaiten Baker Interdisciplinary Gallery continues onsite exhibitions, so an open building does not mean the usual multi-gallery route or public access to collection storage.
Check the current exhibition dates before crossing campus. During an installed show, read sequences, contact sheets, cropping, print choices, and archival context slowly; one small gallery can still support a rich visit when the work is treated as evidence of editing and intention. Between exhibitions there may be no public gallery experience at all.
Researchers use the separate Laura Volkerding Study Center by appointment Monday–Thursday, with four weeks required for fine-print or archive requests. That process is not a substitute for a casual gallery visit, and the CCP exhibition at Phoenix Art Museum is an offsite program governed by that museum's own hours and admission.
- Main galleries
- Closed during a multiyear collections project
- Public access
- Baker Gallery exhibitions only
- Research
- Separate appointment process
Quick guide
- Before leaving
- Confirm a Baker Gallery exhibition is installed
- Inside
- Study sequence, crop, print, and archival context
Plan for the gallery that is actually open
- Check the exhibition window
- The Baker Gallery follows dated exhibitions; building hours alone do not guarantee art is installed.
- Read photographic process
- Compare frames, cropping, print scale, captions, and working materials rather than treating each image as isolated.
- Keep research separate
- Study Center access is appointment-only and fine-print or archive requests need four weeks.
- Do not transfer offsite logistics
- A CCP exhibition at Phoenix Art Museum follows that institution's location, hours, and admission—not this card's.
Good to know
Staffed building hours are not the same as public gallery hours. Exhibition changeovers can create multiweek gaps, so use the live calendar and confirm that a named show is open rather than assuming continuous access.
