Carlsbad Caverns National Park

A steep natural entrance, immense decorated chambers, cave-adapted life, and summer bat flights make the cavern both a geological system and a living habitat.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Artwork inspired by Will Shuster

Carlsbad’s chambers formed largely when hydrogen sulfide rising from petroleum deposits mixed with oxygenated groundwater to create sulfuric acid, dissolving limestone from below. That origin differs from the rainwater-driven cave story taught at many caverns. Later mineral deposition built stalactites, stalagmites, columns, draperies, and gypsum features inside enormous rooms.

Reserve timed cavern entry before driving out; an entrance pass and park admission are separate requirements. Descend the Natural Entrance if knees, time, and steep grades allow, then explore the Big Room and use the elevator out. The evening bat flight is seasonal and phone use is prohibited during the program to protect the colony.

Quick guide

$1 timed entry for every visitor, including pass holders
Enter by
2:30 p.m.; ticket sales stop at 2:15 p.m.

Build the cave day around the entry cutoff

Before driving
Reserve the $1 timed entry for every person and save the confirmation offline; a federal pass does not replace it.
Descent choice
Use the Natural Entrance only if 15–20% grades, wet footing, and the 1.25-mile descent fit your knees and timing.
Big Room
Slow down for scale, mineral textures, and the sulfuric-acid cave story; wheelchair routes remain limited by narrow and uneven sections.
Exit
Enter no later than 2:30 p.m. and keep the 4:45 p.m. final elevator in view; guided tours remain suspended.

Good to know

Download the reservation before leaving reliable service. Walnut Canyon Desert Drive and named backcountry trails remain flood-closed, and a visible ranger-tour booking link does not mean guided cave tours have resumed.
