Cane River Creole National Historical Park

Oakland and Magnolia preserve different parts of a Cane River plantation system shaped by slavery, Creole communities, tenant farming, agriculture, and long continuity.

Artwork inspired by Clementine Hunter

The park has two separate units about twenty-five miles apart. Oakland retains an exceptional range of buildings and family records, while Magnolia preserves brick cabins, store, gin-related structures, and landscapes tied to enslaved and post-emancipation Black communities. Neither unit alone is “the park,” and neither can be understood solely as a house museum.

Check which buildings and ranger programs are open before driving the rural corridor. At both units, distinguish the histories of enslaved labor, landowning Creole families, emancipation, sharecropping, tenant farming, mechanization, and preservation. Descendant communities are not historical scenery; respectful interpretation names people and acknowledges that family connections to these places continue.

Make the visit count

Do not merge the units
Use a separate site map and chronology for Oakland and Magnolia.
Start with labor systems
Follow housing, fields, processing, storage, credit, and movement before admiring decorative details.
Read materials
Bousillage, brick, timber, and repair patterns reveal skilled work and changing resources.
Name continuity
Look for post-emancipation tenancy, community institutions, and descendant voices rather than ending the story in 1865.

Good to know

There is no single park entrance and cellular service can be unreliable. Download maps, bring water, and confirm ranger staffing before setting out; Magnolia’s main house is privately owned and not part of the NPS visitor route, while building access at both units changes with preservation work.
