Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum
Mansion rooms, specimen trees, perennial borders, bamboo grove, water garden, and Great Lawn unfold across thirty-three designed waterfront acres.

Artwork inspired by George William Whitaker
Blithewold preserves the relationship among architecture, family life, horticulture, and Narragansett Bay. Its arboretum includes rare mature trees, while formal and naturalistic garden rooms shift in character without losing the long axis from mansion to water. Plant maturity, not just floral display, is its defining achievement.
Use the garden map and choose seasonal priorities rather than walking every path indiscriminately. Daffodils, roses, giant sequoia, bamboo, and autumn foliage peak at different times. The mansion, grounds, tea, and special programs may follow separate access rules. The giant sequoia and other mature specimens give the property an arboretum scale that flower-season photographs understate. A return in another season changes the balance among architecture, foliage, and bay.
