Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness
Gray washes, orange clinker, petrified wood, balanced hoodoos, and dinosaur-age strata create a remote wilderness with almost no built guidance.

Artwork inspired by Jaune Quick-to-See Smith
Bisti and De-Na-Zin expose Late Cretaceous rocks laid down near ancient rivers, swamps, and coastal environments. Erosion reveals hoodoos, concretions, coal seams, clinker, petrified wood, and fossils. Famous formations are widely dispersed and have no signed trail connecting them.
This is a navigation outing, not a viewpoint park. Carry offline topographic mapping, a compass backup, water, sun protection, and coordinates for your vehicle; footprints vanish across washes and many formations look similar on return. Avoid wet clay, flash-flood conditions, fossil collecting, and climbing fragile caps.

Build an evidence-led visit to Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness
- Prepare
- Download maps and mark the vehicle before leaving it.
- Choose one area
- Do not chase every named formation in one visit.
- Read ground
- Notice coal, clinker, petrified wood, and changing strata.
- Leave intact
- Do not collect fossils or climb fragile hoodoos.
Good to know
There is no water, shade, reliable cell service, staffed entrance, or maintained trail. Access roads can become impassable when wet, and a passenger car may not suit every approach. Tell someone your route and return time; summer midday and monsoon storms are poor choices.
