Alvord Desert
Alvord Desert focuses the visit on a broad playa beneath the abrupt east face of and silence.

Artwork inspired by C. S. Price
The Alvord Desert is a broad playa at the foot of Steens Mountain’s steep eastern escarpment. Evaporation leaves a pale, nearly level lake bed whose emptiness makes fault-block relief and distance unusually legible. After rain, however, the hard-looking surface can become soft mud capable of trapping vehicles.
Public access reaches the playa through limited approaches mixed with private land, grazing, and hot-spring businesses. Confirm the legal entry, never drive on a wet surface, and carry water, fuel, navigation, and recovery supplies without assuming cell service. Wind and temperature change rapidly after sunset, while speed endangers people and wildlife even on dry ground.

Good to know
The playa is not an all-weather road or consequence-free driving arena. A dry entry can become impassable after distant rain, and some apparent access routes cross private property.
