Akron Art Museum
Modern and contemporary art occupy an 1899 brick building pierced and wrapped by a steel-and-glass addition whose rooms make scale, light, and civic space part of every exhibition.

Artwork inspired by Raphael Gleitsmann
The museum’s architecture stages a productive disagreement. The restrained former post office and the angular 2007 addition meet without pretending to be one period, creating galleries that range from intimate rooms to tall, irregular volumes. The collection begins around 1850 and emphasizes modern and contemporary art, with photography and work connected to northeast Ohio providing useful paths through changing exhibitions.
Start by reading the seam between buildings, then choose one exhibition whose installation uses the room actively. Ask what the curator gains from ceiling height, daylight, compression, or an unexpected sightline. Thursday’s long, free hours make it possible to look slowly; construction-related gallery changes and temporary closure notices still make the current visit page essential.

Good to know
The public entrance is only on South High Street. Doors visible behind the museum and on the historic brick building are not visitor entrances, so parking in the rear lot requires walking around the block or through the garden route when open.
