ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge

The Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto rivers meet tidal marsh, forest, managed rice impoundments, and former plantation lands within a nationally significant conservation partnership.

ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge

Artwork inspired by Alice Ravenel Huger Smith

ACE Basin is best understood as a connected estuary rather than a single destination. Tidal marshes, forests, former rice fields, and three river systems form a conservation landscape whose waterworks also embody plantation agriculture and enslaved labor. Those engineered impoundments now support wildlife, but their present ecological value should not obscure the history that created them.

Begin with a specific public tract, since Grove Plantation, Bear Island, and other units differ in habitat, access, and seasonal restrictions. Move slowly along roads and observation areas, scanning creek edges, impoundments, and forest margins instead of trying to cover the entire basin. Download an official map beforehand and prepare for sparse signs, limited facilities, insects, and unreliable cell service.

Quick guide

Best wildlife habit
Stop repeatedly and scan rather than covering refuge roads at sightseeing speed.
Seasonal control
Water management, hunting dates, and bird migration can change which areas are useful or open.

Approach a vast estuary through one access point

Choose a unit
Grove Plantation, Bear Island, and other public areas offer different habitats and seasonal access.
Scan water edges
Impoundments, tidal creeks, rice fields, and forest margins concentrate different wildlife.
Add plantation history
Historic rice engineering still shapes wetlands now managed for conservation.
Bring self-sufficiency
Distances, limited facilities, insects, and changing road conditions reward advance preparation.

Good to know

Pick one official tract and download its map; a broad ACE Basin pin is not an arrival plan.
