Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

Full-scale environments, original artifacts, political cartoons, theaters, and a research library reconstruct Lincoln’s life while exposing how public memory is made.

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

Artwork inspired by Lorado Taft

The museum uses theatrical environments to move from the Kentucky cabin through Springfield politics, the White House, Civil War, assassination, and mourning. Those sets are memorable, but the strongest visit continually distinguishes reconstruction from artifact: letters, campaign material, photographs, and library research provide evidence that scenery alone cannot.

Watch how the galleries present Lincoln’s evolving position on slavery and the agency of enslaved and free Black Americans. The Ghosts of the Library and Lincoln’s Eyes programs interpret archival memory through staged effects, so visitors who prefer a document-centered experience can balance them with the Treasures Gallery. The separate research library is not the same public attraction.
